The SEGGER RX Adapter Rev9 supports JTAG and FINE connections and replaces the RX FINE Adapter. This page provides technical information about the adapter. For an overview of SEGGER adapters, refer to Adapter Overview.

Overview

The RX Adapter Rev9 connects SEGGER J-Link debug probes and Flashers to target hardware featuring Renesas RX MCUs. It adapts the standard 20-pin SEGGER connector to the 14-pin RX target connector.

The adapter can be used for both JTAG and FINE. Select the interface supported by the target device using JP1 aund JP2 as described below.

Pinout

JTAG

Pin Signal Pin Signal
1 TCK 2 GND
3 nTRST 4 EMLE (1 kΩ pull-up to VTref)
5 TDO 6 NC
7 MD0 8 VTref
9 TMS 10 MD1 / UB
11 TDI 12 GND
13 nRES 14 GND

FINE

Pin Signal Pin Signal
1 FINEC 2 GND
3 NC 4 GND
5 TXD 6 NC
7 FINED 8 VTref
9 NC 10 UB
11 RXD 12 GND
13 #RESET 14 GND

FINED is an open-drain signal. In FINE mode, the adapter provides a 3.3 kΩ pull-up to VTref through R9 on the TMS signal routed to FINED. An additional pull-up on the target board is not required for this signal.

Jumper settings

Interface selection: FINE / JTAG

The adapter has two interface-selection jumpers:

  • (JP1) selects the signal connected to target-connector pin 7: MD0 for JTAG or FINED for FINE.
  • (JP2) selects the connection of target-connector pin 4: EMLE with a 1 kΩ pull-up to VTref for JTAG or GND for FINE.

Always set jumpers JP1 and JP2 to the same position. Both must be in the JTAG position or both must be in the FINE position. Do not use a mixed configuration.

Interface Jumper (JP1) Jumper (JP2)
JTAG Pins 1–2 closed Pins 1–2 closed
FINE Pins 2–3 closed Pins 2–3 closed

Use the JTAG / FINE markings and pin-1 identification on the adapter to select the correct contacts.

Target power supply

JP3 controls the optional target supply at target-connector pin 8 (VTref). It is independent of the JTAG / FINE selection.

Jumper C (JP3) Function
Pins 1–2 closed Supply the target with 5 V from the probe / programmer supply
Pins 2–3 closed Supply the target with 3.3 V through the adapter's voltage regulator
Open (no jumper fitted) Do not supply power to the target through the adapter

Select a supply voltage matching the target hardware. For an externally powered target, leave jumper C open and connect the target's I/O voltage to VTref.

Configuration procedure

  1. Select JTAG or FINE as required by the target device.
  2. Set both jumpers JP1 and JP2 to the corresponding position in the interface-selection table.
  3. Set jumper C to 5 V, 3.3 V, or open, according to the target's power supply.
  4. Check that A and B are set identically before connecting the target.
